This story was submitted over night and was sent to the RCMP for comment.
Reportee was driving home when she encountered a couple walking on Hwy 97 near the Tim Hortons. The female was very intoxicated and a risk of being hit by passing motorists. Oliver Detachment Member attended and located the couple walking just south of the location. Both were well off the roadway. The male was assisting the intoxicated female and gave assurances he would look after her. The female stated she was ok with walking with the male. They only had a short distance to their campsite. The names were obtained and permitted to proceed. No further police action required.

“I was driving home from work from Osoyoos (between 23:30-24:00) and as I was driving up to the new light by Tim Hortons, I could barely make out some human figures in my lane. They were south of the actual light – in total darkness. There was oncoming traffic and as I got closer I saw a dog (young Shepherd pup) right in the middle of the road. I could not go around and a thousand things were going through my mind…do they need help, is someone injured, is the dog hurt, etc…etc… I came to a full stop in the northbound lane and the young woman ran up to my truck and attempted to gain entry. I could see that she was not injured – nor was her male accomplice or the pup. I locked my door and was just about to roll down the window so I could speak to them and ask what was wrong, but before I could do that she started hitting and kicking my vehicle. I could no longer see where the male was and I became very worried for my safety. I accelerated and drove off towards downtown. I pulled over by Oliver Family Grocery and called 911. Dispatch took all the details and said RCMP would be sent to the location. While I was parked on side of road a van past me and when I ended the call and went by the RCMP detachment I saw the driver of the van was in the parking lot – looked like that person was trying to reach an officer. I would assume that that driver experienced what I had…
Thankfully I haven’t heard of either the man or woman getting hit – or any passer- by being car jacked or assaulted…over these last few days. Nevertheless, I thought it was worthwhile to “put out” there for other Oliverites because of the obvious safety concerns highlighted above. Something for everyone to keep in mind…if they get stopped by people on the highway in the middle of the night.”
