On October 14th 2011 at 6:32PM, Oliver/Osoyoos RCMP received a report of a motor vehicle incident and vehicle fire on Highway 97, approximately 5Km north of Gallagher Lake, near Oliver, BC. A Red 1996 Volkswagon Jetta had gone off road right, striking a tree and bursting into flames shortly after impact. The
nineteen year old Keremeos male driver and his 19 year old Oliver male passenger escaped with non-life-threatening injuries but were taken to South Okanagan General Hospital by ambulance as a precaution.The driver admitted to falling asleep at the wheel and was subsequently issued a violation ticket for “Drive Without Due Care and Attention.” Alcohol is not believed to be a factor. The Oliver Fire Department were on scene and able to suppress the fire before further damage was done to trees in the area. There was significant damage to the vehicle both from the collision and fire suppression and it is believed to be a write-off.
