September was a hard month. Not only did we loose our local high school but we were saddened to hear about the challenges Hunter Miller and his family were facing, as Hunter battles Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The Millers are parishioners at our church and Hunter is part of our Grade 7 Confirmation/Catechism program. Our church has always tried to extend a hand to help, in our church community or town community and this was no exception. We were glad to help by letting SOSS staff and students use our hall facility and church parking lot as much as needed. As well, we’ve been busy, coming up with fund raising ideas to aid part of our “family”, the Millers.
Some of the Grade 7 girls from our Parish helped with a bake sale which took place at Canadian Tire last weekend. Our local Knights of Columbus have extended a hand to help as well. On October 15, we are holding an Oktoberfest Dinner/Dance and Silent Auction for Hunter. It will be a small event, only 150 tickets, and will be held in our church hall. Anyone wishing to donate silent auction items can contact Lucy Riley 498 6765 any time. And Hunter’s Confirmation class will continue to help by collecting recycling and organizing and holding a spaghetti dinner in February. And.. this is just the start.
It truly does mean something to be part of a large town community and a smaller church community. Together, it is amazing what can be accomplished.
Thanks to the Oberg-Miller family for the photo and the story by Lucy Riley
