Local MLA John Slater (shown right)is coordinating a meeting this week to bring all concerned parties together to discuss options and directions to go. Slater attended the fire at SOSS on Monday.
The Provincial government has programs in place to deal with emergency situations like Monday morning’s fire at Southern Okanagan Secondary School in Oliver.
A Ministry of Education spokesperson says the government is committed to ensuring students and staff have temporary space as soon as possible. An adjuster will be making recommendations to the province on loss – replacement for the school under the government’s school protection program. The province does have a standard protocol for dealing with major issues such as fire or flood which are emergent capitol projects.
Under that program, all costs for replacement of the school would be covered, including temporary accommodations, busing costs and any expenses associated with student and school relocation.
