2. Frank Venables auditorium – gone
3. New school – heavily damaged ( old east wing gutted )
The Oliver Fire Department would like to thank the community for an out-pouring of support and offers of assistance during the SOSS fire.
Spokesman Spencer Tribbick says the fireman really appreciate the support of the people of Oliver.
Tribbick said about 28 local firemen fought the blaze. He said that when the OFD arrived on the scene after 2 a.m. the east wing was fully engaged and the blaze raced to either end of the structure erupting in the south wing/auditorium area and to the north in the new administration/library area.
Firemen did find evidence that sprinklers were on in parts of the old building but fire spread quickly above the ceiling with sprinklers. No known cause of the fire is being discussed but Tribbick indicated that the blaze moved very quickly. Chief Danny Skaros called the fire suspicious and said it started in the east wing.
Tribbick thanked both the Osoyoos and OK Falls fire departments for their support – along with other agencies. One excavator was used from V-Line equipment and several elevation devices owned/leased by Greyback Construction helped fight the fire.
