“It is critical to ask the individual directly if they are considering suicide – and to take their feelings seriously. This conversation helps to determine the degree of suicide risk. An individual at risk of suicide needs to be listened to with empathy, and without pre-conceived judgment.” – Crisis Line worker.
If someone indicates that they are suicidal, help is available. Concerned colleagues, friends or family members should take steps to connect the suicidal individual with a mental health professional, family doctor or 24-hour crisis line. If an individual appears to be at imminent risk, they should be taken to a hospital emergency room immediately.
