What does it take to play the game of curling? – a bit of balance, a touch of flexibility and some stored up energy! These are things all our kids have and what better place to put them to use than on a sheet of ice throwing rocks and sweeping.
Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from October to March, the 4-sheets of ice at the Oliver Curling Centre are filled with local youths learning and playing the sport of curling. This is a game you can play at any age. Our programs include:
5 – 11 age group from 3:00 – 4:00 pm.
12 – 18 age group from 4:00 – 5:00 pm.
Each year a junior bonspiel is held with teams participating from Osoyoos, Penticton, and other local communities. This season the bonspiel is set for Saturday, February 11th, 2012. Last year Oliver hosted the Juvenile Zone Playdowns with a local team of five girls participating (Hanna Ellis, Samantha Ridley, Kelsey Beckett, Thea Anderson, and Ashley Hibner). It was great experience for our local curlers and spectators were treated to some good curling.
The Junior Curling Program has a dedicated team of volunteer curlers and parents led by Donneva Heaven. The Kiwanis Club has been a steady sponsor of our junior program for many years and last year the Elks Club generously sponsored our girl’s team that participated in the Juvenile Playdowns. This type of backing is so important to the continued success of the program. Our goal this year is to increase the competitiveness of our junior teams with the introduction of the Junior League. Any person/group interested in playing in this league, or interested in sponsorship of this league can contact Dale Dodge at 250-498-4014 for details.
Curling, first and foremost, is a game of fun and respect – the same as what life is all about? The best curlers in the world have to start somewhere – lets make it Oliver. Parents are invited to attend the registration and social evening planned for Friday, September 23rd at 7:00 pm, or register on Tuesday, October 11th at 3:00 pm at the Oliver Curling Centre.
