Jack Layton has lost his battle with cancer, dying overnite at his home.

The 61-year-old politician had recently stepped down as federal NDP leader, but had expressed hope that he would return when Parliament resumed.

“I was deeply saddened to learn this morning of the death of Jack Layton,” Prime Minister Stephen Harper said in a press statement.

Governor-General David Johnston said of Layton: “He dedicated his life to serving his fellow citizens. He did this with so much grace. He will be missed.‬”
