First I heard the fire alarm and then sirens – there was smoke in the sky over the Rockcliffe neighbourhood. When I arrived it appeared that an electrical arc had started a grass fire below a pole and spread to a hedge. No damage to the nearby home but lots of smoke. But what started the arc? The arc fire was confirmed by the Oliver Fire Department. OFD spokesman Spencer Tribback said one man, a helper, was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.
Further up the road a man (a person walking a bike) was hit while riding on the south (orchard) side of Fairview Rd. He was taken to hospital in Penticton for treatment. Picture below shows three units at Oliver Hospital.
Further west on 350th a small black car had flipped over after shearing off a power pole. The elderly driver was injured but taken out of the car quickly and assisted on the other side of the street by neighbours and then rushed to hospital. Cpl. Mike Fields says both men were hospitalized for the treatment of no-life threatening injuries.

The small black car swerved side to side on the roadway to hit a person on one side and then a pole on the other side. The pole was sheered off and had to be replaced.
Thanks to all the people who rushed to the scene to look after the injured people prior to on-duty fire, police and ambulance personnel arrived.
After the fire on 350th – emergency crews moved to a call on the other side of town
– a report of a van fire in the 37400 block 71st at the north of Tuc-el-nuit Lake. Fire Department PR person Spencer Tribbick says details of that later incident are sketchy. Fire put out quickly by Fire Department. No further details – broken glass and gas cans spotted at the scene.
