Most products in food stores and other stores are clearly marked as to price. Meat packages, dairy products, eggs, packaged goods and tins. BUT…
On produce you select your potatoes, bananas, oranges etc – put them in a bag (weigh them or not) and take them to the till. Sometimes you can be shocked by the price of the total on any one product in a bag. I was recently surprised by a price and talked to the produce manager. Some stores advertise a lower per POUND price and the computer computes it in KG. It can shock you if you are on a budget.
I am not mentioning any store by name as that might be unfair – but it is fair comment to say – buyer beware – become aware of pricing and just how much might be charged at the till. And I would like to know why all products weighed are not ticketed/priced/computer displayed at the same type of weight measurement.
Another matter to consider is the direction is coming from afar – wholesaler/owner etc. I don’t buy that as if you can’t have a consistent/fair ticketing policy – something is wrong.
I have to admit I have shopped at Oliver’s two grocery stores – we are lucky to have the choice to go to one or the other or both. Look for bargains, shop local. Let the local manager know of any of your concerns – give them a chance.
Watch the produce prices at the till. And yes I have received a number of inquiries about this subject from readers. And yes one of the stores is a sponsor of this blog.
