On Wednesday July 13, Mary Dorothy Oberg passed away peacefully at the South Okanagan General Hospital at the age of 69 years. She was predeceased by her sisters Doris Sargent, Kathy Johnson, Rose Harry and brothers Antoine, Gilbert and Norman Harry. Mary will be fondly remembered by her loving family including husband Tom; son Mike; daughter Denise (Jeff) Miller; grandchildren Sydney, Chayce and Camryn Oberg and Hunter and Blake Miller; her sisters Jeannie, Agnus and Doreen as well as extended family and friends.
Mary was born on January 6, 1942 in Williams Lake. She graduated high school from St. Ann’s Academy in Kamloops and went on and completed Grade 13 from Kamloops Secondary. Mary then graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Victoria as a Registered Nurse. She enjoyed a long career as a Registered Nurse (fourth Aboriginal to become an RN). She worked as a lay apostle for Bishop O’Grady at the Domano Residential High School in Prince George. She spent many years caring for people at G.R. Baker Hospital in Quesnel, Cariboo Memorial Hospital in Williams Lake, West Coast General Hospital in Port Alberni and at S.O.G.H. in Oliver. Mary was an active member of Christ the King Catholic Church. She loved to travel and enjoyed trips to Hawaii, a Caribbean Cruise, the Yukon Territory, Disneyland, New York, Montreal, Quebec City, Fatima, Portugal, Lourdes, France and Spain. Mary also enjoyed camping, photography, knitting, gardening but number one was spending time with her grandchildren. A Funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr. Sebastian Puthenpura Monday July 18 at Christ the King Catholic Church. A private urn interment and committal will be held on Tuesday July 19th at the Oliver Municipal Cemetery.
