It’s a Saturday morning and the only thing on my mind is the success of the day. Oliver’s International Sunshine Festival (a parade and a day at the park for kids and the whole community).
There is not a lot of news this morning – a dozy weekend – but it makes me reflect on just what Oliver Daily News is trying to do. Inform, entertain, stimulate the community with news of local government, business, kids, arts and entertainment. Recently one particular person said he thought there had been a change recently with less news in this blog. That could be true. Maybe there is less news happening this year compared to last summer when we had too much news.
As a person who worked in news for 15 years in Vancouver I can tell you there is not much real news in Oliver – or the Okanagan Valley in general. For Oliver maybe 3 or 4 stories in a year rate to be in a Vancouver newspaper – maybe 30 stories in a year rate to be printed in valley newspapers. Any newspaper or news blog locally prints what they can find or information that is contributed. Both have to really stretch it sometimes to fill the pages.
Oliver Daily News prides it self in connecting with people and many wonderful photographers have found a place to show their work. Many artists have paintings and artwork exposed to the public eye.
Our mission is to show you the whole community. We love it and we hope you do too.
We are less than a year old – many ups and a few downs – time will tell whether we truly succeed. You can help by contributing pictures and information on events, happenings etc.
Thanks for listening. Jack Bennest, Publisher
