Both the communities of Oliver and Osoyoos have been the leaders in blue bag recycling and solid waste management. The amount of garbage has been reduced a great deal and the amount of recycled material is way up – producing revenue for the contractor. The result longer life at the dump.
With yard waste – RDOS staff convinced the board to adopt a strategic plan for the future and to continue efforts to recycle and reduce waste at all the landfills.
Plastics bags (clear or any other colour) do not compost well – so it was recommended that kraft bags be used or designated open containers.
It now appears that rural residents are getting info in the mail saying clear bags are okay. I cannot dispute that. I hope most rural residents in Area A and Area CÂ will go with the same procedures as the Towns of Oliver and Osoyoos.
