The BC Government wants an indication from the people located on the Osoyoos Indian Band Reserve – as to what they think about a prison being situated on their land.
That vote is Thursday, June 16th.
The $220 million project could create up to 200 new full-time jobs in the area. The province plans to select a proposed site for the facility by the end of June.
Construction is expected to begin in 2013 with the facility being opened to inmates in 2015.
The proposed corrections facility will will be a medium security, 360-cell facility.
Lumby, Penticton and Summerland as well as the Penticton Indian Band have also submitted possible sites for consideration.
Provincial government officials have toured the Oliver site and a full delegation of municipal leaders including Chief Clarence Louie met recently with the Minister responsible, Shirley Bond.
