K Sisters to perform June 10th at Medici’s

Caitlin Beaupré, soprano

B.Mus & M.Mus (University of British Columbia) has been performing in Vancouver almost all her life.  She is a member of musica intima, the dynamic K Sisters, and is the music director at St. Francis-in-the-Wood Anglican Church in West Vancouver.  Caitlin began her love affair with performing at age 7 when she began her studies in music, dance and acting at the Jennings Institute for Performing Artists where she earned her Performance Diploma.  Since then she has sung five seasons with the Vancouver Chamber Choir, three seasons with the Cantata Singers, and two years as a member of the Holy Rosary Quartet.  She was the music director and an entertainer at the Capilano Suspension Bridge for 5 years, and was the music director and conductor for the UBC G & S Society’s production of Iolanthe, and for the Kitsilano Secondary School’s production of The Wiz.  In May of 2010, Caitlin was awarded first place in Senior Speech Arts at the BC Provincial Performing Arts Festival including the awards of Most Outstanding Performer in the Speech Arts Division and Best Canadian Performance in Senior Speech Arts.  Caitlin believes that music and performance can lift humanity to a more peaceful way of being and that artists have the ability to change the world.

Katy Hedalen, soprano

Celebrated for the clear silver-like quality and versatility of her voice, Katy Hedalen recently returned to Vancouver, after teaching and performing in Toronto. Among her performing engagements in Canada, the UK, France and the United States, she counts numerous opera, recital, and concert appearances. As an avid promoter of contemporary music, Katy has premiered several works, including a full-length opera and songs that were specially written for her. She is a graduate of the University of British Columbia (B Mus. Voice) and the University of Colorado (M Mus. Vocal Pedagogy and Performance). Katy has taught Voice and Opera Workshop courses at Oklahoma State University, and at the Merriam School of Music in Toronto was the Voice Department Head, responsible for overseeing and training new voice teachers, in addition to teaching full time.  Katy’s passion is to share music with wide-spread audiences, educating and entertaining through different styles. Known for her creative recital programming and engaging performances, she presents classical music in a completely accessible, non-classical way. She feels there is so much wonderful music to be heard that she wants to share it with everyone!

Karen Lee-Morlang, piano/vocals

In demand as one of Vancouver’s top collaborative pianists, Karen Lee-Morlang has been a fixture on the Canadian musical scene for the past several years. Performer, educator and impresario, Karen is “funny, brainy and creative.” Well-loved and remembered for her boisterous and charming personality as well as her brilliant programming, Karen has become particularly well-known in B.C. communities for her collaborative skills at the piano and for championing art music for new audiences. Immediately after graduating with her second degree in Music from UBC (BMus, DPST), she taught as a Sessional Lecturer in Collaborative Piano at the University for four years. During that time, she also won numerous international and local awards that enabled her to travel to Europe and North America for further studies. In the spring of 2007, Karen created and hosted a new series called Nuts & Notes on CBC Radio One as well as guest hosting on West Coast Performance for CBC Radio Two. In addition to directing and hosting a free informal concert series at the Vancouver Public Library, Karen hosts a variety of outreach programmes all over the Lower Mainland.

Jennifer McLaren, mezzo-soprano
A native of Calgary, Jennifer holds a B. Mus. in Voice Performance/Minor in Drama from the University of Calgary and a Diploma in Music Performance from Mount Royal College.  Jennifer started her musical studies in accordion at the age of 5 and shortly thereafter was introduced to her greatest passion – choral music. She recently completed her fourth season with the Vancouver Chamber Choir (Jon Washburn, Artistic Director), one of Canada’s foremost professional choral ensembles. Jennifer maintains a busy performance, recording and touring schedule as one of the 20 choristers in the ensemble.  In addition to appearing as a vocal soloist in both the Calgary and Vancouver areas, Jennifer has a passion for theatre, running the gamut from opera and musical theatre to contemporary productions and self-produced works.  She most recently appeared as Mad Margaret in North Shore Light Opera’s production of Ruddigore. Other favourite roles include Dido in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas (U of C) and Martha in Anatomy Lesson (winning the Calgary Pumphouse Theatres One-Act Play Award for Best Actress). She has worked as an actor and/or composer for a variety of theatre companies throughout Alberta and B.C.  Jennifer currently teaches private music lessons at the White Rock School of Music & Dance, and is also assistant conductor for Zing! Children’s Choir in Vancouver.
