The Oliver Community Gardens received some TLC on Thursday and Friday thanks to Claire Schwartzenberger, the School District Consultant for the Commuity Foods Action Initiative.
With the cooperation and much appreciated donated time of Laura Venables from V-Line Construction, Bob Golosky from NEWSTART Landscaping and Contracting Ltd , and Steve Staresina with the Oliver Arts Council, the land was further prepared, soil provided and water access obtained to get school boxes ready for planting. Students from Oliver Elementary, Tuc El Nuit, and Sen Pok Chin have all received “Let’s get Growing” lessons sponsored by a grant from CIBC to highlight the importance of agriculture and eating locally.
On Friday, various classes walked to the garden to take their classroom knowledge and put it into practice…Regardless what age, tender loving care was taken to transfer their seedlings to their new home. Getting back to basics – a necessity for our youth so that we can preserve our agricultural land, support our farmers, and understand the importance of eating locally.
