I am writing to let you know about the good work being done in our community by Desert Sun, a non-profit charitible organization. All the board members and staff are local residents. The offices are located in Oliver and Osoyoos. Services provided are counselling for women and children, a Safe Home project for women and children, Community Kitchen for young families to learn shopping on a budget, growing and preparing food, and food preservation, and a men’s counselling program. All the programs are free to the participants.
Many service clubs, local businesses and wineries, and individuals have helped in our fundraising efforts, as the funding provided by federal and provincial governments falls short of what is needed to provide the programs. Recently fashion shows have been held at the Watermark Wine Bar and Spirits Free Coffee Shop in Osoyoos. Coming up, members of the Oliver Business Association are sponsoring a show for Desert Sun at Medici’s. On June 16th Beyond Bliss, Athina’s, Mark’s Work Wear, Alberto’s Decorating Centre, OK Photo Lab, Cantaloupe Annie’s and Oliver Bakery have banded together to sponsor a Desert Sun fundraiser called “Accessorize”, and evening of fun and fashion.
Desert Sun has also benefited from 2 fantastic garage sales, the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation sales, that were put on by the local realty offices in Osoyoos and Oliver. We greatly appreciate these events and and the people who have so generously donated their time to support our programs.
I would like to let you know that the general public has an opportunity to help during the month of June. There will be collection boxes at the Oliver and Osoyoos BC Liquor Stores for the month. THey will also be at the Heritage Market and Jardin Antiques in OK Falls. Hopefully people can drop some coins or bills into these boxes.
More info. about Desert Sun can be directed to the office at 498-2538.
Thank You, Pat Monahan
