Volunteers Needed at the South Okanagan Immigrant Community Services
When: Homework club is offered 3 days per week Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 3pm – 4pm
How many: currently between 5 to 12 Children and 5 to 10 parent/caregivers are attending
Who needs it: the Homework club is part of SOICS Immigrant Outreach and Community Based programs which assist Newcomer families to integrate an adapt into the Canadian school system and the community at large
Why – The need for this program was identified thru feedback from our Settlement Worker in School District #53, our Enhanced Childhood program and the Welcoming Communities Initiative which “Prepares Immigrant children & their parent/caregiver for school life in Canada.
Community volunteers etc. – SOICS homework club has been supported with Oliver community volunteers, high school volunteers and SOICS volunteer staff members in collaboration with our Social Mentoring programs which are designed to provide “buddies/hosts” or Social Mentors to assist with a newcomer family’s adaptation and integration.
