Oliver town councillor Marji Basso has decided to throw her hat in the ring for the NDP provincial nomination in Boundary Similkameen.
Here is how the story unfolds – Thursday morning I am told by an NDP insider that Basso had met with her local nomination team. Basso was then pressed for more information by Oliver Daily News.
Later in the day Marji told her fellow council members and the press that she is set to meet with party President Moe Sihota in Osoyoos this weekend. If nominated by that party she would run against MLA John Slater whenever the next election is called.
Basso says she will not seek re-election in the next municipal election in November. This, she says, will leave her free to travel the riding in the months ahead learning what needs to be done to get elected.
“I have officially sent my nomination papers in to be considered a NDP nominee candidate for the next Provincial election. My papers have been received as of this morning, and will be brought to the next Provincial Executive meeting for consideration.
My decision was one that I considered three years ago, and this time ’round was not made lightly. I have the full support of my family, a group of supporters who are willing to be part of my nomination team, and a couple of MLA’s in this region. I believe that it is time for me to pursue this opportunity, see where it will lead me, and with a lot of hard work, allow me to represent the people of the Boundary Similkameen riding.”
