TOWN HALL MEETING – BRIDESVILLE

On December 4, 2014 due to a significant increase in Police calls to Bridesville, the Osoyoos RCMP held a Town Meeting at the Bridesville Community Hall. To date in 2014 the RCMP have received 53 calls for service to Bridesville compared with 2013 (14 calls), and 2012 (16 calls). The increase in calls are due in large part to a continuing and escalating conflict with several residents.
Approximately 60 residents attended the meeting which lasted 2.5 hours. The RCMP explained Police structures in the area and the Justice System in general. Multiple questions were fielded from those in attendance and several of their concerns were raised. The RCMP engaged the people of Bridesville in providing ways to assist the Police to increase safety and reduce local conflicts.
At times the meeting became very heated as several residents voiced their frustration with historical incidents as well as the ongoing neighbour disputes. Heated discussions are often expected to occur at these types of meetings when people have a clear passion for their community and the communities well being.
As the meeting came to a close a large number of attendees, including some of the more vocal ones, stayed behind to thank the RCMP for their efforts to positively move their community forward. Many locals discussed options including starting a rural community crime watch of which two residents volunteered to champion.
