“I think the best way to sum it up is with the phrase, ‘Information Architecture,’” said Laurena Weninger, about what she does as owner of Write this Down Freelancing.
“I take information and I put it together, designed specifically to be delivered to an end user. That includes websites, but can also include other things too, like press releases, blog entries brochures, posters or rack cards… it goes on and on.”
Many will recognize Weninger (at least her name), from her days as editor of the Oliver Chronicle. Recent months have seen her working on a contract basis for clients including the Town of Oliver, the Osoyoos and District Museum and Archives Society, Oliver’s Parks and Recreation department, and magazines such as Orchard and Vine. Her name still shows up often in local and regional media, both as a news freelancer and in her role doing public relations for local businesses and organizations.
To her, it comes down to knowing how to package information in a way that will most effectively see the delivery of the desired message.
“That’s what I like most about website design and development,” she said. “It means sorting through relevant information, identifying what is most important and organizing it in a way that makes sense – in a way that people are going to notice and find useful.”
A presence on the Internet is something businesses and organizations shouldn’t be without, Weninger said. Gone is the tendency to pick up a nearby phone book or the yellow pages to find a product or service. Now, potential customers and clients “Google” their local options – and the quicker they can locate a service, the better.
“Putting up a website can seem like a pretty big task, but with the proper assistance it’s not as daunting,” Weninger said. “Call it a blog, call it a website, use Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn, but get yourself some help getting online – it’s not as hard as you think.”
